Minor Hotels has revealed a significant collaboration with The Cavaleros Group for the management of a hotel located in Johannesburg, South Africa. This partnership marks the African debut of Minor Hotels’ NH Collection brand.
Starting from July 1st, 2024, Minor Hotels will assume management of the hotel situated in Sandton, Johannesburg’s financial hub. Initially operating as NH Sandton, the 329-room property will undergo a comprehensive refurbishment before being rebranded as NH Collection Sandton.
With a legacy of three decades, the hotel is strategically located in Sandton, roughly 20 kilometers from O.R. Tambo International Airport. The establishment will provide a variety of accommodation options, including standard rooms, suites, one-bedroom suites, and the opulent Royal Suite. Amenities at the hotel will encompass two dining outlets, two bars, an executive lounge, conference facilities, a fitness center, and a sizable outdoor pool.
Established in 1926 in South Africa, The Cavaleros Group, with its property division founded in 1967 by the late Cosmas Cavaleros, is today led by Penny Cavaleros and Alexi Cavaleros. The group is a major player in the South African property sector, focusing on the investment and development of data centers, commercial, industrial, hospitality, and retail properties. It is renowned for its high-quality asset portfolio and is expected to expand its hospitality ventures across Africa.
This strategic alliance with The Cavaleros Group is a milestone for Minor Hotels, as it forges a path into South Africa, recognized as Africa’s second-largest economy by GDP, and a key target for the group’s future expansion. Both parties are committed to nurturing a robust partnership, aiming to collaborate on additional hospitality projects across the African continent.
William Heinecke, Chairman and Founder of Minor International, the parent company of Minor Hotels, said: “We are delighted to enter into this strategic partnership with The Cavaleros Group, introducing NH and soon NH Collection to South Africa. This new property will complement our expanding African portfolio, where our Anantara, Avani, and Elewana brands are already well-established. We are excited about this new collaboration with Penny and the Cavaleros team.”
Penny Cavaleros, CEO of The Cavaleros Group, remarked: “Our decision to collaborate with Minor Hotels for our Sandton Hotel and future ventures in Africa is a significant step for The Cavaleros Group. We have been proactive in identifying growth opportunities within the property sector, with hospitality being a key area for expansion into the African market. Our extensive engagement with international hotel groups has led us to Minor Hotels, whose values align with ours. We are currently exploring various hospitality opportunities across the continent.”
Minor Hotels currently manages 27 hotels and resorts across eight countries in Africa, under its Anantara, Avani, and Elewana Collection brands, with a pipeline of additional properties in the works.
NH Collection, with over 90 properties globally, is known for its prime city locations in Europe and the Americas. The brand expanded to the Middle East last year and is set to make its Asian debut with the opening of NH Collection Chiang Mai in Thailand. More launches are planned for this year in Finland and Qatar.
